D'AUTRES SONS

Show I On tour I 2025 - 1h

On paper, this instrumentation seems to come out of nowhere: clarinet, bassoon, and guitar! Except that music isn’t so much made by instruments as by the personalities who play them, and when viewed from this angle, this combination seems like a no-brainer. David Chevallier and Catherine Delaunay have shared years of collaboration and exchange, dating back to their time together in the large ensemble Tous Dehors. Their collaboration with Sophie Bernado is more recent, but one can already sense the chemistry between these two mavericks, capable of bringing together the most disparate musical worlds. As for the clarinetist and the bassoonist, whether by chance or fate, their paths had already crossed half a decade ago during a project centered on Italo Calvino. One thing is certain: these three share a sense of curiosity and open-mindedness, a willingness to take risks, and a taste for the unexpected. So, let yourself be surprised!

POINTBREAK

"Clarinets, guitar, and bassoon are firmly anchored on stage, but the music lies elsewhere. The sounds emerge from an incantation, piercing the space with euphoria and lightness. It’s delicate; it’s joyful. Catherine Delaunay carries us with her breath along ridgelines, just as our thoughts might during a journey of self-discovery. There is this paradox of accessible mystery in the deep bass notes of the clarinets—a sonic imprint of the past reshaped in the moment by this trio. From these invocations arises a joyful polyphony, a sparing and collective dissonance that tenderly intertwines. The trio sounds like the world, its people, and its challenges. A sonic parallel to our collective trials. Promises, too, of a resolution in this Beauty and these new sonic paths charted by the trio."

CULTURE JAZZ

"The unique instrumentation of this trio presents acoustic music enhanced by subtle amplification.

We recognize David Chevallier’s sophisticated, complex, and rich compositional style, which allows the listener to hear and imagine a larger orchestra with multiple voices. This is thanks to the harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic details that the composer so masterfully employs, just as he does in other Baroque-inspired projects.

A wonderful opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the bassoon—an instrument rarely featured in jazz but magnificently highlighted by Sophie Bernado."
